Grammie's Quotes

Grammie has alternated between funny and kind of mean.  She doesn't intend to be mean, but sometimes it comes across that way.  Here are some of her funnier sayings in the past week.

I was smelling her flowers and they were very spiky and went up my nose.  I told this to Grammie and she said, "Serves you right."

Last Friday, AJ was getting Grammie cleaned up and comfortable.  I was sitting in the chair on the other side of the curtain.
Grammie: Katie comes and Katie goes.
Me: Grammie, I'm right here.  I'm sitting in your chair.
Grammie: Katie comes and Katie goes.
AJ: Mom, she's on the other side of the curtain.
Grammie: Katie comes and Katie goes. This is Rush Limbaugh singing off.
Me: Grammie are being Rush Limbaugh?
Grammie: If that what's you want.

Yesterday I told Grammie I was leaving.
Grammie: Don't go.
Me: I have to go to the grocery store and get food.
Grammie: Send Jane
Me: Grocery shopping is a personal thing.  What if Jane likes black bananas and I like green.
Grammie: That's true. Don't go.
Me: Mother's Day is coming up and I need to get presents and put them in the mail or I'll be in trouble.
Grammie: You go.

Grammie's Mom

Yesterday was Mamo Toby's (Grammie's Mom) birthday. She would have been 120. I started doing the math in my head and realized that she was only 31 when she had Grammie, which doesn't seem too bad until you realize that Grammie's oldest brother was 16 yrs. older than her. So, Mamo Toby was married at 14 and had her first baby at 15. How far we've come in America to wait until our 20's or 30's to get married.

Last Week and the Weekend

Monday-There was no school. Yeah! I met with a friend for coffee for an hour. Then I ran errands looking for a vacuum sealer. Didn't find the right one, but that's okay. I had a Dr. appointment at 1:30, but got there at 1 and read for awhile. After the appt., I went to Grammie and Pa's for 1 1/2 hours.

Tuesday-I had Bible Study. We had dinner beforehand and it was wonderful to see everyone. I had taken a Tuna Fish sandwich for myself and gluten free brownies to share with everyone. Someone had made potato soup (my favorite) and it was gluten free. I was so excited I had seconds. :-) Everyone loved my brownies and I had leftovers. I was able to stay for the study and left around 7:45 to get to bed.

Wednesday- I went to Grammie and Pa's for 2 hours. Grammie was in a great mood. She was leaning over and I told her she was listing to the left. I asked if she had been drinking and she said, "Moderately." When I asked her what that meant she said, "You know." I asked her how many drinks she had had and she said, "About 5." Right! We looked at the crossword puzzle and then watched I Love Lucy.

Thursday-I came straight home from work and did nothing.

Friday-I went to Grammie and Pa's for 1 1/2 hours. I got home a little after 5 and crawled into bed. I stayed there until Sat. morning. I wasn't sleeping the whole time, but I was too tired to move or do anything.

Saturday-I woke up at 6 and got my laundry and recycling ready. I was at the laundry mat by 7:45. I put all my laundry in the machine and read my book. By 9:10 I was finished with my laundry and headed to Carmen's house. We came back to my house so that I could put my laundry away and hang up the shirts. Then we went to Micheal's craft store and wandered around. After that, we went to JoAnn's and looked at random things. Then we went to the dollar store, but didn't stay long. By this time, we were hungry so we went to Arby's for lunch. Walmart was our next stop. I thought it was a little insane to go to Walmart at 12 o'clock on a Saturday, but it really wasn't too bad. I saw a vacuum sealer, but I didn't have my money for it, so I'll have to go back. I did buy new sheets. (They are zebra striped, so I'll not use them if my migraine is bad or I'll just have to close my eyes to climb into bed.) I took Carmen back home and just hung out at my house.

Sunday-I went to the grocery store and then to church. I got home a little after 11 and was looking forward to watching the Daytona 500. It was rained out. :-( I took a nap and read a book. I also baked bread. (Something went a little wrong, but I don't know what. Maybe I didn't have enough honey in it.) I just chilled the rest of the day. I did work on next week's Bible Study and that was nice.

That was my week. I hope your week went well.

My new goal

I have been sick since the first of the year. Every year I hope that this is the year that my health is under control and I can finally be healthy, but that hasn't happened yet. I started the year with the flu which lasted over a week. Then I had a migraine for 2 1/2 weeks. That went away after seeing the doctor twice. Then I got a cold which turned into a sinus infection. After taking meds for 5 days I finally woke up feeling better and then I got another migraine which I've had for 5 days. I saw the doctor today and he adjusted my upper body and my migraine went away for about 30 min. and it was back. He said it's a stress migraine and I need to stop feeling like I need to get things done. Now, those that know me know how hard that is for me. I have a list of things that I feel need to be done and should have been done before yesterday. For example, my list at the moment includes: making a quilt for Janice's birthday (first part of April), making a quilt for Maritza as an Easter present, making a quilt for a high school student at church who is graduating, and my memory quilt before August. This list doesn't include daily and weekly things that I feel should be getting done.
I understand what Dr. Peine is saying and I've decided to try and approach things a little differently. My goal is going to be looking at the things that I have accomplished in a day and then in a week. I hope that this will show me that I do lots of things, but they may not be on my goals list. Forgive me if the next few posts seem a little boring. I hope to blog about what my day/week looks like. Maybe seeing it in print will change my attitude.

I'll start with the weekend.
-Friday afternoon I got a call to babysit at the last minute for a family I had been referred to. I left work at 2:45, talked to the mom for a few minutes and went home to rest, change clothes, and make dinner. When I got home Audie called and we talked for awhile. It's always great to talk to him because he is so positive and such and encouragement to me. I rested for a few minutes, make my dinner and headed out the door at 4:15. I went to the post office and mailed a package, then went to the library to kill a couple of minutes. After checking out a couple of books, I headed to babysit. I watched 2 adorable boys (ages 2 &4) from 5-8:30. I got home and fell asleep by 9:30. I slept until 7:30 Saturday morning.
-Saturday, I went to see Grammie and Pa from 10:30-12. I left their house and came home to take a long nap. Saturday evening I cut out some quilt fabric and chilled.
-Sunday, I went to the grocery store and then to church. I got home around 11 and fell asleep for a little bit. I talked to Grandma Michigan for awhile and then spent 4 1/2 hours making sweet potato biscuits. (They didn't really turn out by the way.) At 5:30, I went to Jack and Michelle's and stayed til 9. I fell asleep around 10:15 and work up at 1 from a bad dream. I was awake til 2:15 ish and then woke up at 6:45.
-Mom called at 7:15 forgetting that I didn't have school, but it was ok because I was awake. We talked until almost 8. I got up and turned on the oven thinking I could fix my biscuits by adding more flour to the dough. It sort of worked. At 10:15, I went to Costco to get gas and Almonds and then headed to lunch with Julia. We had lunch from 11-12:15 and then I went to Fred Meyer for Potato Starch. I had some time, so I went to Target to look at vacuum sealers. I didn't buy one because they are too expensive there, maybe Amazon? At 1 I headed to my appointment with Dr. Peine. The appointment was for 1:30, so I sat and enjoyed the quiet while looking at magazines. I left his office around 2:20 and went to Winco because I realized I didn't have enough Tapioca Starch. I got to Grammie and Pa's at 3 and stayed until 4:30. As I got home around 5, I started a batch of bread. That should take about 3 hours until it's done. As I was gathering the ingredients for my bread, I cleaned out my spice cupboard. Now it looks neat and tidy. Oh the joy of the little things in life. :-) I cooked stuffed peppers for dinner which took awhile, but it was worth it. Then, while I was watching tv, I took the rows of Maritza's quilt and sewed them into a top. So now I just need to put the back on and quilt it.

As I type this, it's no wonder I'm exhausted all the time and don't have a lot of free time. Each week, I get up and go to work which is difficult on most days. I pour myself into the kids while I'm there for 7 hours. Then, 3 days a week I head to Grammie and Pa's for 1-2 hours. If I'm feeling well, Tuesday is Bible Study night which means that I leave my house around 6:15 and get home around 9:30. Sundays, I spend the afternoon baking bread and sometimes have dinner with Jack and Michelle.

It seems from this post that I do a lot more than I tend to give myself credit for. I'm going to try and see the accomplishments I do achieve and not be so worried about the things that don't get done.

Grammie's memory

Grammie is losing her memory fairly quickly. It is quite hard to watch because she honestly is forgetting people that she sees often. She can't recall Dad's name and doesn't know he is her son. Her title for him? He is AJ's neighbor that comes and smells her flowers. (He always smells whatever flowers she has on the table.) She was asking AJ one weekend who I belonged to. AJ told her Scott and there was no recognition. Then she said that I was Maritza's sister. That brought recognition. I belonged to the neighbor who comes and smells her flowers.
Grammie does have a better memory at night which is weird. She'll remember all sorts of things and can even give me answers to the crossword puzzle. I had told Dad this, but he got to see it firsthand. On Saturday, he went down to be with Grammie and Pa. Grammie looked at Dad and said, "Jane thinks she's Blanche, but we both know better." Dad thought it was hysterical. After awhile Grammie looked at him and said, "Are you waiting to talk to Father?" Dad said, "In my mind I thought, Yeah Grammie, I've been waiting in the queue for an hour and 1/2 to talk to Pa."
